State’s Preconception Health Plan

In order to address South Carolina's nationally low rank in infant mortality, preterm birth, sexually transmitted infections, poverty, unplanned pregnancy and chronic disease, the March of Dimes and South Carolina's Dept of Health and Environmental Control began in September 2010 to organize local preconception coalitions across the state.

Each region’s coalition will be tasked with conducting an initial assessment of pre/interconception health needs in each respective region, developing a regional plan to address the issue, implementing programs/initiatives to target need, and evaluating the process and provide feedback to stakeholders. Regional activities will be rolled up into a state wide plan for improving pre/interconception health. These plans will also be used to support ongoing multi-state initiatives to address pre/interconception health issues.

The ultimate goal of these consortiums is to develop a state group that will disseminate information about preconception projects that have demonstrated success, create research and program opportunities among systems, maximize limited resources, and stimulate new ideas and products for moving the preconception health/women’s wellness agenda forward.

To ensure success, we need assistance with program ideas and implementation in each of the four regions of our state (Upstate, Midland, Pee Dee and Low Country). Are you a consumer or health care provider with concerns about preconception health in South Carolina? Do you have experience organizing volunteers and projects? Can you donate time or space from a media outlet? Please contact Megan Branham, March of of Dimes Director of Program Services, at  803 252 5200.
