State’s Preconception Health Plan

The Mississippi State Department of Health recently convened a multidisciplinary team to develop a state preconception health plan. Some preconception and interconception programs have been implemented but a comprehensive state plan for preconception health has not yet been completed.

Preconception Health Activity Highlights

In 2008, the Mississippi State Department of Health began work implementing two pilot programs for interconception care in the state. The two programs known as the MIME (Metropolitan Infant Mortality Elimination) and the DIME (Delta Infant Mortality Elimination) work with women who have recently delivered a very low birthweight infant. The programs provide comprehensive case management, outreach, primary health care services, and basic dental care to high risk women to help improve their overall health and well-being prior to any subsequent pregnancies. A focus of the programs is to assist women in achieving optimal child spacing and developing a personal plan for reproductive health.

Mississippi’s Family Planning program provides preconception and interconception care services to family planning clients throughout the state of Mississippi. The program offers family planning services at more than 100 local health departments and county clinics.
